MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is an inspection method for detecting surface and near surface discontinuities in ferrous materials.

MPI uses magnetic fields generated by a portable  electro-magnet combined with small magnetic particles (i.e. iron filings) suspended in a solution to detect flaws in components.

As such the component being inspected must be made of a ferromagnetic material such as iron, nickel, cobalt, or some of their alloys. These are materials that can be magnetized to a level that will allow the inspection to be effective.

Depending on the sensitivity level requirements, we can conduct MPI using the following techniques:

  • Visible light contrast method

  • UV fluorescent method

  • Hot surface powder (For high temperature surfaces)
